The Wasteland Gazette's Final Edition
My last comic for The Nib, plus some upcoming conventions and podcast appearances.
Here it is. My last comic for The Nib.
Nib odds and ends
You gotta see Mattie Lubchanky’s last comic for The Nib, a wasteland comic in which they literally roast my ass. We wrapped up with many more comics than usual last week, so skim the site to check those out.
SPX is this weekend in Bethesda, Maryland, and I’ll be tabling with The Nib magazines and my own books. The Scams and Color issues of The Nib mag are sold out at our warehouse, as is our 2016 collection Eat More Comics, so I’ll have some of the last copies on earth. Come say hi!
There’s a real nice Washington Post article for which I was interviewed covering the life and closure of The Nib. There’s no real mention of all the people I worked with, however, so see my last newsletter for that.
If you are wondering where you can continue to follow or support Nib contributors, we sent out a handy email today telling you where you can find everyone.
Justice Warriors is back in stock
A story right out of issue #1 of Justice Warriors, supply chains could not meet consumer demand, causing widespread panic buying of the acclaimed dystopian cop series I make with Ben Clarkson. It took a little while, but Justice Warriors is now back in stock in most places.
I’m not selling them myself at the moment, but you could pick a copy up through this Simon & Schuster link at the usual places or call to order one from your local comics shop or bookstore. I hint strongly: supporting this series (which I think you’ll love) is the best way to get more of them made.
I’ll be tabling at other comic conventions this month with Justice Warriors and the rest of my comics output. After SPX is the Guelph Comics Jam September 16 at The Dragon in Ontario, Canada. This is the nearest comic shop to where I live now. Free to attend! I’ll also be at CXC in Columbus, Ohio, on September 30-October 1 at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. There will be a panel about The Nib (with contributors Ben Passmore and Emi Gennis) and also a Nib-related afterparty!
Podcasts
I continue to appear on podcasts. There are few things I am more qualified to do than discuss the authorized novelization of Demolition Man on the Authorized Novelizations Podcast. We dig into the book with my Justice Warriors collaborator Ben Clarkson, which contains a slightly better version of the story clearly based on an early cut of the film that hadn’t yet edited out key elements, such as John Spartan’s daughter.
As we all know, I am a fan of Demolition Man and I plan to do something about it.
Then, Ben and I discuss the classic 1975 dystopian film Rollerball and its less-classic 2002 remake on the Left of the Projector Podcast (listen here on Spotify).
Rollerball started as a 1973 short story in Esquire titled "Roller Ball Murder." I have to call attention to this sick ass two page spread they gave to illustrator Charlie White III. The short story is available online here and, if you like the movie, it's worth a read as it also contains some great details that didn't make the film.
That’s it for this week! I am not certain how often this newsletter will go out over the next few months, as I am very much, uh, “between projects” right now. But rest assured I’m not even close to being done with comics. There’s ideas, writing, and drawing happening over here, but it will take a little while to get my next project(s) off the ground.
Looking forward to seeing what you share with us next.
